Drew - Another year another FIFA. FIFA 20 is an end-of-cycle iteration that can still legitimately claim to be different and better than its predecessors. This year, the addition of a completely new Mode adds some much-needed excitement to the series, it adding street and indoor football. In addition, the gameplay and game mode have also changed a lot.

Volta Football
New this year is VOLTA Football - a reincarnation of FIFA Street - which makes for a fun alternative on the standard 11 vs 11 fares. You can play three vs three, four vs four and five vs five matches with professional futsal rules.
It also picks up the mantle of the game's story mode following the Journey from FIFA 17 through FIFA 19 and allows you to create your own custom player to progress from an amateur to being the best futsal and street footballer in the world.
This is excellent woven into the rest of VOLTA, as you go on a journey to build and expand your street team.
Starting with the brand-new model of FIFA 20, VOLTA harkens back to the days of FIFA Street, with close control and skillful flair taking the spotlight in smaller matches. There’s a short story mode that lasts five hours or so, which, while awfully cheesy, has a good degree of production value.
Ultimate Team
FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) is the most popular part of every FIFA and this year sees the menu system get an overhaul as well as rewards and objectives. Players can earn XP from playing more matches, buying and selling players, completing challenges and more which gives rewards through Season Objectives.
This year, Ultimate Team matches are split into three distinct types: Squad Battles for single-player matches against other players' squads, Division Rivals which puts you in ranked matches against similar opponents, and Friendlies. The latter is not just great for a quick match in single, couch co-op or PvP, it has some bonkers new gameplay styles that are great for parties.
The new Ultimate Team is a much better experience this time around, with a keener, cleaner focus on both single and multiplayer matches, with the grind of former years replaced with a more purposeful structure.
Career Mode
The usual choice of mode in FIFA was Career Mode, it is back again this year with a few improvements.
One of those is FUT Friendlies, where you can play against your friends using classic or house skills, and play without threat of contract expiry or injuries to your FUT team. With FUT you also have season objectives; complete season objectives to earn XP to increase your rank and unlock items, varying from packs to cosmetics. FUT added a new comparison menu while you edit your team line-up. Compare players in the transfer market or review the players in your club; it makes for a very handy feature when maximizing chemistry or higher overall score.
With several new modes under its wing, Kick-Off mode can integrate Volta features, or use House Rules, an expanded edition of last year’s modes. Mystery Ball is a fun mode that changes the perk or conditions on the ball every time it is out of play, and, amongst other advantages, can be a neat way to earn some extra goals or increase your speed up the pitch. King of the Hill has you keep possession of the ball inside a perimeter box; keep possession to get a chance of increasing your goal bonus.
Gameplay
Gameplay features updates and improvements from previous years. The biggest change to gameplay is with set-pieces, with free-kicks now more intuitive while penalty kicks now use timed finishing and can be incredibly rewarding or frustrating - much like a real-life penalty shootout.
As for the on-pitch gameplay as a whole, it still feels tangible and real, while retaining some of the arcade fun that makes every FIFA game a joy. Plus, with several subtle but smart graphical and sonic enhancements, it's even easier to lose yourself in the experience now.
Verdict
It hasn't broken new ground as promised, but it still looks great, its refinements and improvements provide the best in the series yet. has the majority of the licenses and boasts the Pro Evo-trumping Ultimate Team, the offline portion of FUT is better than ever this year, and much-improved Career Mode. It will please the majority of football fans once again. FIFA 20 is worth giving another go if you’ve spent a few seasons away from the dugout.
