What are leagues in Path of Exile?
Leagues are essentially a pool of players to play with, and a set of rules you play by. Each league is its own game world, almost like a game server. The three primary league types are Standard, Private, and Challenge.
• Standard League
The default league most players find themselves in is the Standard League, as the name would suggest. There are two variants to the standard league, which are Hardcore and Solo Self-Found. The Hardcore variant adds a somewhat unique twist on permadeath to your play.
Whenever a player within the hardcore variant standard league dies, their character reverts to whatever form the character was in during the normal standard league. Meanwhile, the Solo Self-Found variant prohibits players from trading with each other or from joining together for raiding parties. Consequently, this variant is for players that exclusively want a solo-campaign experience.
• Private League
Private leagues must be purchased. However, the owning player will consequently be able to add interesting modifiers to the Path of Exile world to enhance their playing experience. The private league can use similar modifiers to other leagues, such as the unique permadeath feature of the hardcore league variant. Or, the owning player can add unique modifiers such as increased monster statistics or disabled vendors.
• Challenge League
The challenge leagues are temporary, as they roughly change every few months or so. Each challenge league is unique, as each league offers a new set of modifiers to the world of Path of Exile. Challenge leagues are always available in pairs, so players will have two unique challenge leagues available at any given time. After some time, the leagues will be removed and then replaced with new and unique leagues.
When a challenge league ends, a player's stash and characters are all shipped over to the relevant permanent league that the player was previously using.
How to Choose the Path of exile Different Leagues?
When you create your character, you will need to choose a league to play them in. The default choice is the currently-active Challenge league. But you can switch your character to the Standard league for a more vanilla experience. The Standard league is a good way to just focus on the story or run the campaign for the first time.
When it comes to choosing a league, it is perhaps best to just stick with the standard league until you have a firm grasp of the game's mechanics. After that, the challenge leagues and standard league variants can be great ways to enhance your play.
What are Hardcore and Solo Self-Found leagues?
Standard league and Challenge league are the main options in the Path of Exile. But You also can choose Standard Hardcore and Challenge Hardcore at the start of the game. These two modes aren't for everyone, but they're a good choice if you're looking to increase your difficulty, or just want to have a good time playing solo.
• Hardcore
Hardcore characters work just like normal characters. However, if you die on a Hardcore Character, you will immediately get transferred to the Standard league.
This is particularly bad for people playing within the leagues because your character gets moved to Standard. For many players who exclusively play leagues, dying in Hardcore means you're essentially deleting your character. Hardcore is, as you might expect, more difficult, and the economy is far more volatile–items are constantly being removed from circulation when players die, and boss drops are fundamentally risky.
• Solo Self-Found
Solo Self-Found is another option. If you choose Solo Self-Found, you can't interact with other players or characters outside of the mode–this includes transferring items from your characters in non-SSF modes. You have to start fresh and can't rely on trading or stockpiled loot to make the game easier. This adds an extra layer of challenge, and SSF is mostly reserved for elite players who want to score bragging rights. You can play SSF Softcore or Hardcore. Note this option is only available once you've rescued the Scion character class in Act 3.
In other words, it's no wonder why a new player would be confused about all the different leagues in Path of Exile. That being said, the fact that you start in Softcore and can then work towards SSF, Hardcore, or even SSF Hardcore gives players the option to explore self-imposed challenges at the pace of their choosing. I've stuck to Standard, but I know I'll try SSF at some point.
Path of Exile: Delirium New League
The Mirror of Delirium is the new league mechanic this season. These are activatable encounters with additional modifiers that are possible through items. They act similarly to breaches and also have a loot streak that can be compared to the legion general battles.
One of the core focuses of Path of Exile: Delirium is amplifying existing enemies to provide a more challenging experience. Players will find a Mirror of Delirium in each area. If you activate it, you enter the Delirium, which adds new abilities to existing monsters in the area. In addition, brand new Delirium monsters will be spawned. The Delirium can affect every encounter in the game, including bosses, which provides an additional challenge. You can also travel deeper into the Delirium, where you'll find more numerous, tougher enemies — but even greater rewards.
